Troubleshooting Google indexing issues
Learn why pages on your Framer site might not appear on Google and what you can do about it.
If Google isn’t indexing your site or some of its pages, Google Search Console can help you understand why.
This guide assumes you’ve already connected your site to Google Search Console and submitted it to Google.
Find pages that aren’t indexed
Open Google Search Console.
Go to Indexing → Pages.
Scroll to Why pages aren’t indexed.
Select a reason to see the affected URLs.
Not every page needs to be indexed. Some exclusions are expected, while others may indicate an issue worth investigating.
Intentional exclusions
These statuses are usually expected when a page has intentionally been hidden, protected, or redirected.
Google Search Console reason | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
Excluded by “noindex” tag | The page is set not to appear in search engines. | If intentional, no action is needed. Otherwise, enable Show this page in search engines in the page settings, publish, and request indexing. |
Blocked due to unauthorized request (401) | The page is password-protected. | If the page should be public and indexed, remove password protection and republish your site. |
Page with redirect | The URL redirects visitors to another page. | If the redirect is intentional, no action is needed. Otherwise, check your redirects in Framer. |
Soft 404 | Google considers the URL to be a missing page. | If this is your 404 page, no action is needed. |
Issues to investigate
These statuses may require further investigation if they affect pages you expect to appear on Google.
Google Search Console reason | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
Soft 404 | Google considers a regular page to be missing or lacking meaningful content. | Make sure the page is accessible and contains meaningful content. |
Duplicate, Google chose different canonical than user | Google considers the page a duplicate and has chosen another URL to index. | Check the canonical URL in Google Search Console. Make the pages more distinct if both should be indexed, or make sure the preferred page is set as canonical. |
Discovered — currently not indexed | Google knows the page exists but hasn’t crawled it yet. | Usually, you can wait. Make sure important pages are internally linked and request indexing if needed. |
Crawled — currently not indexed | Google crawled the page but decided not to index it. | Review the page’s content and internal linking. After making meaningful improvements, request indexing again. |
Manual action | Google found that your site violates its spam policies. | Check Security & Manual Actions → Manual actions, resolve the reported issue, and submit a reconsideration request. |
After fixing an issue
Use the URL Inspection tool in Google Search Console to request indexing after making changes.
Google may take several days or longer to crawl the page again. Requesting indexing does not guarantee that Google will add the page to its index.
FAQ
Does Google index every page on my site?
No. Google decides which pages to index, and it’s normal for some pages to be excluded.
How long does it take Google to index a page?
There’s no fixed timeframe. It can take a few days or longer for Google to crawl a page and update its indexing status.
Does requesting indexing guarantee that my page will appear on Google?
No. It asks Google to crawl the page again, but Google ultimately decides whether to index it.
